SIER SAFARIS TURNS EDUCATIONAL
|
|
|
Both Dirk and Betsy Nevin came dove hunting with us for 4 weekends in a row as they were in Cordoba studying and improving their Spanish skills. On their last weekend their friends Rodgers and Mary Dockstader, also from Vail, CO joined them for an exciting dove hunt. Both couples are wonderful people, had fun and said everything was MUY BUENO!. This coming year Sier Safaris will be running a package for those who want to spend a month learning Spanish with excellent Spanish teachers in different ranches in Argentina and go hunting each weekend. All this will not provide only the learning and fun of being in Argentina studying Spanish but also the practice which will help you use your knowledge and develop your language skills.

Once again Keith Huber and Dave Copeland (Houston, TX) met with Kelly Carter and his group down in La Paloma without planning it… hugs and handshakes were shared as well as great hunting moments, just as last year’s. It’s a classic for our clients to repeat their hunting trips with us and thus meet with those samegroups they hunted with times before. Anyway, Kelly Carter lead the hunting for the whole week with and average of 76 %, as you can appreciate in the picture the hot steamy barrel of his shotgun stands as a witness for his good shooting… Congrats Kelly!

We hosted the very first group from Utah! Now we have references of our services and hunts in every single state. Gary Keller, the group leader, along with 5 fellows had one of the greatest times ever! They actually came through a deal we have with Seminole Guns. It wasn’t just the fact that thousands of doves were flying over their heads what made the trip so fun, just as they manifested, but the fine argentine cooking, juicy beef, wines and hospitality helped big time in order to make of this a unique experience.

After one of the driest summer seasons in the last year, we have had to chase pigeon a little bit more southern than from our area, where water’s mirrors and huge trees reign. This change has favored us, since we may now have access to our pigeon area from Bahia Blanca airport (just at 125 miles). Anyway, the first couple of pigeon hunts we have had this season so far were positive for our first visitors, so it is that we have been found forced to set a limited daily shooting rate of 500 daily shots.
The hunting in general was outstanding and the hosted groups were really kind . We particularly have very good memories of Mr. William Trotter III and his sons Hallum and William IV, a great family and above all true gentlemen.

By Jon R. Sundra (*)
Luis Sier and I go way back, all the way to 1979, in fact, when I first hunted geese with him in Chubut province. Back then he was a struggling young outfitter just getting started in the business. Today he’s one of the largest and most successful outfitters in Argentina, and I can well understand why. He has aggressively sought and acquired exclusive hunting rights in some of the very best areas in the country for doves, pigeon, partridge, ducks, geese, and of course Argentina’s two big game species, Red stag and wild boar.
Since our first hunt together some 24 years ago, I’ve been back several times to experience all the various types of wingshooting Luis offers. Each trip was memorable. However, never having hunted Red stag there, Luis finally talked me into booking a hunt I undertook this past March. What intrigued me about hunting with Luis was the fact that he hunts only free-ranging animals, i. e., no high fences, and that, unlike Europe and New Zealand, there are no additional costs should you be lucky enough to shoot a monster. A hunt having a fixed price is what American hunters are accustomed to, and frankly, it’s the only arrangement I’m comfortable with.
My hunt was the first week of the season and it was unusually warm, so the animals were not moving around much. As a result, my guide, Eugenio Lutz, who was also the manager of the 30,000 acre estancia we were hunting, had me putting in a lot of hours -- about 8 to 9 a day.
After three days of some pretty hard hunting, the stags finally started bugling (or “roaring” as they call it there and in Europe), and we were able to pull off an exciting stalk on what turned out to be a Silver Medal stag that sported antlers of about 11 kgs.
It was a great hunt; one that made me feel like I really earned my trophy.
Because these are free-ranging animals, there’s no guarantee of success, but of the 9 clients Luis had hunting that week, seven of us took stags, and the two who didn’t had opportunities.
Aside from hunting, my passions are good food and good wine; to me, that’s almost as important as the hunt itself. In fact, my hobbies are gourmet cooking and wine appreciation, so you can understand my preoccupation with both. In that regard, Luis and I are simpatico. He knows good food and good wine, and sees to it that his clients have an abundance of both…and enjoy them amid comfortable accommodations.
Hey Luis: like the Terminator said, “I’ll be back!”

HARD TIME!! (RECORDS 2003!!)
|
|
Richard Mitchell, from Mesa, Arizona, well known by us, the “WHIP” of the doves, still keep the amazing level of 95,8% ( 3550 rounds of shells, 3401 doves), this makes us think, that he shoot to the flocks … (our private investigator, could not prove this). Probably he will be the best shooter of 2003 year. Also Sarah Lilford, from Zimbabwe, obtain the unbelievable record of 0,3%, (1000 rounds of shells,3 doves). Without any doubt this will be the record more difficult to break...
